Dr. Barbara Michiels Hernandez
2022 National Dance Society Dance Scholar Award
Dr. Hernandez has consistently demonstrated her love of dance through her national and international leadership, editorial work, grantsmanship, curriculum design, and dedication to service in the domains of dance and dance education. She has an impressive record of creative and academic accomplishments, performance, and choreography. She was founder, artistic director, and professional dancer with the Alexandria Civic Ballet and was a dancer in USO concert shows across the U.S. Dr. Hernandez was Executive Director of the National Dance Association for three years and has served on professional and community committees and advisory boards, including the National Endowment for the Arts, Dance Teacher Magazine, and Dancing in the Millennium International Conference. Her numerous publications and conference presentations evidence her international scope of understanding. Dr Hernandez has a visionary comprehension of pedagogy and has been at the forefront of discovering and sharing how dance educators could most effectively use the internet and innovative techniques to deliver quality dance education.
